Didn't like the red. I think a softer blue or green would be easier on the eyes. But when I first visited I found that the calendar was partially covered up by another element. So I think the placement of sections was a little off. the series of links across the top send you to pages where there is too much talk, talk, talk, and not enough quickly found practical information. Contact information is well down the page and the hours are not readily found immediately.
That's a lot of info on the home page! Some things are in two places (knowitnow and search). May be good for people who can't find icons, but why crowd it? The red "library events" stripe and box on left visually organize much of the info. Graphics in middle are balanced to lead the eye down. Love how the side columns remain as I navigate tabs - don't feel as lost as on some other sites, can always find search, always remember what page I'm visiting, strong London Library "brand" RSS feeds are kind of cool.
From a reference staff member: I like the golden/burgundy color combination. Also like the fact that info on right & left side of the page remains regardless of which tab you click. The hours could be more visible. A slogan might be nice for our website too just as long as it’s not lame like London’s.
Staff comments: Pros: Colors, Tabs across Top of page, Search Box, Calendar, Nice Font, New Books highlighted, nice detail, Flash Box of current events/books, etc.

ReplyDeleteFrom another reference staff member: liked changing cover images for new books on homepage.
ReplyDeleteThat's not red, Loretta, it's burgundy. Horrible color.
ReplyDelete"The library for your everyday life" Horrible slogan.
Suggestions: Clean lines; vivid colors; attention to composition; distinctive iconography. It's a graphic design, not a bulletin board.

burgundy? really? I would say it's more of a maroon
ReplyDeleteContact info is lost at the bottom. Phone number needs to be easy to find.
